Regaining control of national boarders has become a key political issue in Europe as well as in the US. Globalization is under attack. The European integration process seems to be at a crossroads. In 1945, Karl Polanyi warned against the reconstruction of a global market system under US leadership and argued instead in favor of a multilateral world order based on negotiated trade between “tame empires”. What can we learn of Polanyi’s analysis? What is the background for the current confusion? How can it be understood? Who (or what) are the driving forces? How to respond to it?
