We are happy to announce Professor Lane Kenworthy as our sixth Vienna Karl Polanyi Visiting Professor for the winter term 2023! In the course of his visit to Vienna, he will hold a PhD-seminar at the University of Vienna (UniVie), an Internal Workshop at Central European University (CEU) and an open lecture. 

About

Lane Kenworthy is Professor of Sociology & Political Science and Yankelovich Chair in Social Thought at the University of California-San Diego since 2007. As a sociologist and political scientist, he is examining the economic effects of income and wealth distribution and works on the welfare-state, transformation towards increased social and economic security and equal opportunity. He has published extensively in journals and books and takes his teaching very seriously.

His areas of research and teaching include the “causes and consequences of living standards, capabilities, poverty, inequality, mobility, employment, economic growth, social policy, taxes, public opinion, politics, and more in the United States and other rich longstanding-democratic countries”. In his recent publication “The Good Society” Prof. Kenworthy discusses “What We Want In A Good Society” across various topics from community, democracy, economic equality, opportunity, prosperity, family, finance, health, inclusion to safety and privacy as well as the question “How To Get Good-Society Outcomes?”, which you can find on his homepage. There you can also transparently follow his teaching.

Before coming to the University of California-San Diego, Prof. Kenworthy worked at the University of Arizona, as an assistant professor at the Emory University and the Rochester Institute of Technology. Lane Kenworthy obtained his PhD in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and his B.A. from Harvard University.
